6th June 2017 – My Procrastination

After the last couple of posts I have been trying to think on why I Procrastinate so much and it’s not because I don’t want to write, I want more than anything to see my books in the local Waterstones next to my favourite authors. To be able to leave work and write full time would be a dream come true. But instead of working towards that goal I am wasting time on games/tv. So below is why I think I procrastinate.

  1. Distractions – I am luck enough to have an office in my house, but when you see the room there is stuff everywhere, but the distraction comes form the TV and the other things I do on the computer when I should be writing, I actually don’t know what I do with my time sometimes, I can be sat there for hours and when I look back to see what I have achieved there is nothing to say. Facebook, Twitter, You Tube etc. All easy to lose time in.
  2. Fear – Probably the same thing most writers get and some never lose, the fear that what I am writing is pap, I completed my first novel in NaNoWriMo 2015, small at just over 50k but when I read it back it is terrible, I know that is the point of Nano, just to get something down then start with the rewrites and editing but still when I look at it, I shudder. I will rewrite it and release it at some later point at which time it will be classed as a prequel and origin story instead of where the story begins.
  3. Research – Sometimes I think my brain decides to remember what it wants which is why I like to make notes. But one of the issues I have is not having a clue with some of the technical aspects. My Sci-fi universe is called Shattered Worlds. I have built up a list of races and technologies and have a basic map of the galaxy. This is what I want to use for all my sci-fi stories so I can tie them all in if I need to. The problem I have is justifying some of the tech or knowing what I can use that readers will like. What speeds to make my Hyperspace so the 100k diameter of the galaxy can be travelled. How big to make the ships, when I look at some books and they say the ship is 200 meters and has x inside, I find it hard to visualise these sizes so I am not sure how big to make the ships in my universe.

These are some of the reasons I procrastinate, and these are some of the hurdles I need to just jump. Crack on and do what I know I can do.
